Amazon adds gift certficiate option for Marketplace sellers
Amazon will allow Marketplace sellers to be paid in gift certificates instead of direct deposits to their bank accounts:
Dear Amazon Sellers,
Just in time for the holiday season, sellers are now able to choose Amazon Gift Certificates as a disbursement method for sales made on Marketplace.
Sellers who are shopping on Amazon.com can now use their Gift Certificate dollars to shop for gifts.
To select Gift Certificates as a disbursement method, simply go to Seller Your Account > Get Paid: View your Amazon Payments account and billing history > Select your Disbursement Method, and then select Receive Amazon.com Gift Certificates.
Learn more about using Gift Certificates as a disbursement method.
Thank you for selling on Amazon.com!

I just read on Amazon that Pro Merchants will not be allowed to receive Gift Certificates as their disbursement method.
There is other criteria as well. If you do over $3500 in sales a month you also are not qualified.
Good point, Plethora. I can't imagine why anyone would opt for the gift certificate instead of cash anyway. But here's the fine print:
Gift Certificate Disbursement Eligibility
You will not be able to select "Receive an Amazon Gift Certificate" as a disbursement option if:
1. You are not an existing Seller in Amazon and have not sold items in the past 3-6 months.
2. You are not an existing Buyer in Amazon and have not purchased any item in the past 3-6 months.
3. You are a very high volume seller and usually have a sales velocity greater than $3500.00 every month.
4. You are a Pro Merchant on Amazon.com.
These conditions can change depending on your buying or selling habits at Amazon. Even though you are not eligible for this disbursement option right now, if you meet these conditions in the future, you may then be eligible.
I believe it's further specified that one may only "purchase" $200 of gift certificates per month and any disbursements above and beyond that would be sent to a bank account.
But they also made a point of saying that if you only sold a few items (under the $200 limit presumably) and chose Amazon gift certificates, you would not need to give bank account info.
My guess is this may be a viable option for people who:
1) Have only a few items to sell with a particular goal in mind (e.g. Christmas spending money).
2) Don't want to give Amazon their bank account info/don't have a bank account.
2) Want to circumvent waiting two weeks to have a small amount deposited in a bank account.
