Amazon surveys sellers on third-party tools

If you've taken a look at your seller account page recently, you might have noticed this yellow box at the top. Amazon wants sellers to answer a series of questions regarding third-party software tools for managing your "Amazon sales channel."

Unlike some previous surveys, this one doesn't offer an Amazon gift certificate.

Here's what they want to know:

1. Do you use third party software to sell on Amazon?

2. Please select the Amazon websites that you sell on?

3. What is your Amazon seller name?

4. What is the name of the software that you use?

5. What is the contact information (Name, E-mail and Phone) for your primary contact at the software company?

6. What is the name and website of the software company?

I'm a bit curious as to why Amazon is after this information. Do they want to develop their own software tool and put everyone else out of business? Or perhaps they want to inform these software makers about changes ahead at Amazon.

There could not possibly be any management tool that Amazon doesn't already know about, and they know how to contact them all. Most use The Art of Books (like me) or Fillz, with a few others getting a tiny percentage of users. Surely they can also tell where the uploads are coming from.

In my humble opinion, starting to use a third-party tool (AOB) was the second best business decision I ever made -- after starting to use Endicia instead of Stamps.com. The fee for AOB is tiny and well worth it for the services you get.

I agree. AOB was the best decision I ever made as well. I used to have endicia, But they do not operate on windows vista so I had to go with Pitney bowes. I love them too. Stamps.com was a huge headache. I wonder what Amazon is up to now. I am really starting to not like them. It feels like we work for them instead of ourselves. Amazon sucks and I cant wait until I no longer have to do business with them.

Last post... What are you going to use if you don't use Amazon? Do you mean to list and sell books or to use another 3rd party tool? Are you thinking of your own website? Amazon is still has the best market out there and we have had the most success (by far) with Amazon. I still hate the penny sellers!

It is possible that Amazon.com wanted this information so they could address third-party questions that will come up at the 2007 Independent Amazon Booksellers' Convention this weekend in Seattle (July 13 - 16). A number of the third-party scouting, inventory management, and other service providers will be attending and I am sure they, as well as some booksellers, will have some questions.

I will be attending and presenting for a third-party book scouting vendor. It will be interesting to see if it was Amazon doing their homework before the conference or if they might have been researching to see whether or not to offer some/all of these services themselves.
