Wearing the Cape

Who wants to be a superhero?

Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic.

And now she has some decisions to make. Given the code-name “Astra” and invited to join the Sentinels, Chicago’s premier super-team, will she take up the cape and mask and become a career superhero? Or will she get a handle on her new powers (super-strength has some serious drawbacks) and then get on with her life-plan?

In a world where superheroes join unions and have agents, and the strongest and most photogenic ones become literal supercelebrities, the temptation to become a cape is strong. But the price can be high—especially if you’re “outed” and lose the shield of your secret identity.

Becoming a sidekick puts the decision off for awhile, but Hope’s life is further complicated when The Teatime Anarchist, the supervillain responsible for the Ashland Bombing, takes an interest in her. Apparently as Astra, Hope is supposed to save the world. Or at least a significant part of it.

Unspoken Abandonment

Bryan Wood is a military veteran who served during combat operations in Eastern Afghanistan. After returning from combat, he found that his life was falling apart at every turn, and Bryan faced the greatest battle of his life in finding his own peace. He surprisingly found the answer was hidden within a daily journal kept while at war, and Bryan’s path ultimately led him to find redemption in the most unexpected of places: love.

In a genre filled with war novels, ‘Unspoken Abandonment’ stands out as the work is brilliantly written, in a narrative form, which takes the reader on a breathtaking journey into the heart of Afghanistan. The reader is then taken back to America to face “life after combat.” This story takes a head-on look at the powerful effects of war and post traumatic stress, but the true focus is on the inspirational triumph over this demon that haunts hundreds of thousands of America’s bravest men and women.

Pretty Witches All in a Row

Editorial Review
Pretty Witches All in a Row delivers a compelling crime procedural that kept me guessing the whole way through. Throw in a supernatural twist with magic and a coven of witches, and we’re in for quite a ride. Author Lisa Olsen balances the thrills and chills of paranormal mystery with a generous helping of humor, quick banter and well developed characters. Sergeant Nick Gibson is our sympathetic hero; his playful wit and down to earth relationship with his teenage daughter made me root for him from the first chapter. Annaliese, the pretty witch helping with the investigation, is an enigma; you want to trust her, but there are enough questions that you resist letting your guard down, and you end up hoping Nick isn’t a fool for placing his faith in her. I hope we’ll see this cast of characters again; it’d be a crime not to see where they go next.

If You Go Into The Woods

If You Go Into The Woods is a collection of two unsettling short stories. The title story is set in Caslav, a small town 60 miles east of Prague, Czech Republic. Jiri Beranek is drawn to a nearby forest, captivated by birds hidden high in the trees. Each time he enters, his desire to see the mysterious creatures is checked by his fear of the dark. When he finally forces himself to go farther, he finds a new reason to be afraid. This story was first published by The Delinquent (UK) then selected by Short Story America for inclusion in their anthology of their best stories of 2010.

The bonus story – The Reset Button – is set in Stockholm, Sweden in the depths of winter. Linus Eriksson, a divorced bachelor living alone in his small one-bedroom apartment, is a man with a memory problem: instead of not being able to remember anyone, nobody can remember him. This story is brand new, exclusively available in this e-book. These two creepy tales have a combined length of 4,000 words, or around 16 book pages.

Dumping the Magic: A Retired Cynic Revisits Spirituality and Healing

Dumping the Magic is the story of a cynical agnostic who stumbled onto proof of a real and vital spiritual path—and the adventures and misadventures she encountered trying to navigate that path. By the time Connie reached the age of 58, her view of spirituality and life were well established. She saw the world as often messy, difficult and unfair and decided that God—if there was a God—was unreachable and uninterested. Spirituality, she thought, was just something weak people used to get them through the night. Then, on March 15, 2005, she had an experience that challenged her old beliefs and made her reconsider her picture of the world. This is the story of what happened when Connie’s old magical lenses were cracked, then broken and eventually removed—unceremoniously dumped—and she had to discover (and allow) new lenses, visions and experiences. With unflinching honesty, Connie reveals the ragged and sometimes circuitous path she took from cynicism and fear of life to an acceptance and appreciation of life as a gift. In Dumping the Magic she shares the sign posts and warning signs that might make a similar seeker’s adventure a little easier, or at least less lonely.

Later Bloomers: 35 Folks Over Age 35 Who Found Their Passion And Purpose

Are you a late-blooming adult? Congratulations, you’re in remarkable company!

Julia Child savored her first French meal at age 36. It changed her life and ours—there’d be no Food Network without her! Edgar Rice Burroughs sold his stories Tarzan and John Carter of Mars at 37. The latter will be a major movie next year, a century later. Bertha Benz learned how to drive at 39. She made the world’s first road trip. Susan Boyle electrified the world with her singing voice at age 48. English character actress Liz Smith got her first break at 49. She recently co-starred with Johnny Depp.

Bram Stoker wrote Dracula at age 50. There’s a granny who took up hip-hop dancing at age 64, one who became a famous nightclub DJ at 68, and one who her ran her first marathon at age 86. She’s still running.

These are some of the fascinating people you’ll meet in this compilation. In the garden of life, a “late-blooming” flower blossoms right on time!

Shakespeare's Cuthbert

At the heart of this riotous laugh-a-paragraph farce that will delight members of amateur dramatic societies everywhere, lies a forgotten village in a remote valley where the ‘real valley folk’ live, including Cuthbert, the village undertaker, impressario of the shambolic annual theatre production, and holy fool; Margery, the local beauty and mother of the Mafia twins whose constant creative disruption provides a reliable source of hazard and misadventure; the anonymous milkman whose flashing teeth can fell a woman at fifty paces; Percy the gardener whose still waters run curiously if not necessarily deep; and the regulars at the Mandrake Arms who drink to remember, drink to forget as plots and plans flourish in their midst.

Suddenly into this by-water of rural oblivion bursts a band of newcomers who have taken up residence of the seigneurial Mandrake Hall – Henry, a prominent media reporter and his daughter who is more horse than her horse; Henry’s brother, Ronald, an adventurer, a mercenary and a sometime crook; and the unreconstituted Captain and his much put-upon wife Elspeth.

What are these rank and unlikely outsiders doing in these obscure parts and what are they looking for as they vigorously comb the village and the extensive network of tunnels built beneath it?

One clue is the persistent legend that the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, was once employed as a tutor up at the Hall (thus the annual village play) and that there might still be fragments of his early work – a fumbling politically-incorrect piece – waiting to be discovered.

Fame and fortune may follow, but corpses will be dug up first.

Enter the school system. Under the guidance (and bullying) of a gifted teacher, Ben and Kyle take tentative steps to becoming father and son.

Teacher Melanie Nicols sees Ben as a dead beat dad, but grudgingly comes to admire how he hangs in, determined to learn for his son’s sake. Her admiration grows to more as father and son come to rely on Melanie being a part of their lives.

When parents, particularly mothers, receive the news that their child has autism, they spend countless hours researching the subject, usually at night, after an exhausting day. Teachers, when they learn that they’ll have a student with an autism spectrum dirorder, also try to learn as much as they can. This novel was written for such parents and teachers – a light read that still offers strategies and information on autism.

Count To Ten

Few things worse can happen to a mother than for her child to be diagnosed with cancer.

It started as a pain, that became a ‘hot spot’, that grew into a tumour, ultimately threatening Andrew’s life. At the very least, his leg would have to be amputated, a chilling prospect in itself.

‘Count To Ten’ is the true story of how Andrew and his family coped with the days, weeks, months and years that followed his diagnosis, of the reliefs, the triumphs, the relapses and the outright screaming panics.

It is a testament to Andrew’s passionate determination to pursue his adventurous dreams even in the face of death itself.

It is also a testament to a revolutionary new treatment that was applied with care, expertise and wisdom by the dedicated team at the London Bone Tumour Clinic.

It is so easy to love your children. It is so hard to hang onto hope, especially onto their hope – the hope they need to carry on.
