The Panchatantra is an ancient Indian collection of animal fables in verse and prose. Also known as Kalila and Dimna, these stories are among the oldest on Earth, and a modern retelling of them tops today’s Buffet.
The original Sanskrit work, which some scholars believe was composed in the 3rd century BCE, is based on older oral traditions. Ostensibly, the stories impart worldly insight to the dull-witted sons of a king.
This edition is the first uncompromisingly modern interpretation to be produced in four centuries. The profound meanings of these ancient fables shine brightly, making this classic work fresh, relevant, fascinating, and hugely readable.
An earlier version of this work was produced by author Ramsay Wood and published by Knopf in 1980. Wood believes that these fables provide one the earliest secular examples of what Lawrence Lessig calls Remix Culture.

KALILA AND DIMNA – Fables of Friendship and Betrayal
World Literature
An interconnected, multi-layered and variable arrangement of animal stories, with one story leading to another, sometimes three or four deep. This work is known as Kalila and Dimna or The Panchatantra, its Sanskrit precursor. In Europe, it’s been called The Fables of Bidpai since 1483.
These arrangements have contributed to world literature for over 2000 years, migrating across ancient cultures in a multitude of written and oral formats. All our beast fables from Aesop and the Buddhist, Jataka Tales, through La Fontaine and Uncle Remus are indebted to this strange, shape-shifting ‘book.’
In its original Arabic format, this work is, ostensibly, a handbook for rulers, a so-called ‘Mirror for Princes.’ Using a cascade of teaching stories and verse, it shows how to run the kingdom of your life–and how not to. In their slyly profound grasp of human nature (at its best and worst) these animal fables, usually avoiding any moralistic human criticism, serve up digestible, sage counsel for us all.
