Dan was born in Philadelphia to a mostly blue-collar, hard-working Irish family. He was married in 1976, then during a retreat a year later, he experienced a call to pastoral ministry. Dan began studying and preparing for the next several years, and was ordained as a pastor in 1985 and served in the same church for 25 years, until he retired from ministry in 2010. He began writing full-time in 2010.
