Hey, have you gone fishing yet this year? No?
What’s that, you say you don’t know how to fish? Well, now that excuse is toast, thanks to today’s top Kindle pick: Dynamic Nymphing. (Don’t snicker at the title, it’s not a drama-erotic story.) It’s a fishing manual written by George Daniel, one of the world’s great anglers.
George is the perfect example of someone who’s an expert on one nonfiction topic (sometimes it’s a hobby, a pastime, a business technique — or in this case, a sport) who’s written about their life’s passion, and done a truly great job at it. George’s book sells quite briskly (especially at this time of the year) in hardcover at a list price of nearly $40. But today it’s free and it tops the Buffet, complete with all the full-color photographs from the hardcover.
I’ve known several people like George who are experts in one thing or another. Usually these folks are friendly, charming, great conversationalists, and they just love sharing their special knowledge. Unfortunately, many of these same folks can’t write worth beans. They just don’t have what it takes to write a good book — whether it’s patience, the available time, or simply the ability to put themselves in their readers’ place. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of wordiness — too many words that detract from their message. Anyway, I enjoy celebrating those times when someone has written a book — one book — that is truly outstanding, like George has.
George is one of the most authoritative and insightful anglers of his time, and is perhaps the best fly-fisherman in the world. His book covers advanced tight-line nymphing tactics, including Czech, Polish, French, Spanish, and American techniques. He covers rigging and fishing dry and droppers, curly Qs, and conventional indicators. And he discusses fishing in the extremes: shallow water, cold weather, high water, and wind. He includes casting and technique sequences that include tuck cast, bow and arrow cast, as well as elevating and leading when tight line nymphing.
George’s day job is assistant manager at TCO Fly Shop in State College, Pennsylvania. He conducts fly-fishing clinics for various groups and organizations across the United States. He was on the U.S. Fly Fishing Team from 2006 to 2010, placing fifth at the 2006 world championship and was also the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing Team coach in 2008 and 2009.
So if you plan on going fishing within the next several years — or you have an angler among your friends or family — don’t miss Dynamic Nymphing.

When you fish with dry flies, you can watch how the fly floats and make any necessary adjustments. When you are nymphing, you can’t always see your nymphs or underwater currents, so you often have to make an educated guess based on what you believe is happening below the surface. As you gain experience and use the right tools, reading the currents and making these adjustments becomes easier. Noticing these subtle differences is what separates good anglers from average ones.
Streams are dynamic systems. The speed and depth of a river are constantly changing, even when it looks uniform. One variation that’s important for an angler to be aware of is the difference in speed between the surface and the bottom of a river.
